How to put on the desktop Computer, Documents, Network and Recycle Bin icons

Windows
After a fresh install of Windows, you may encounter a problem. Some important icons are not displayed on your desktop, icons like Computer, Documents, Network and Recycle Bin (or My Computer, My DOcuments, My Network Places on Windows XP).

This is not an error, it’s just a default setting of Windows.

To display these icons on your computer’s desktop, follow the next steps. We will cover Windows 7, Vista and then XP.

Windows 7 and WIndows Vista

  1. Right click on the desktop and choose Personalize (1 on the image below).
  2. From the left column, choose Change desktop icons (2 on the image below).
  3. The Desktop Icons Settings window will appear on the screen. Check the icons that you want to display on the screen (3 on the image below).
  4. Click on OK (4 on the image below).

Windows XP

  1. Right click on the desktop and then choose Properties (1 on the image below).
  2. Choose the Desktop tab (2 on the image below)
  3. Click on Customize Desktop (3 on the image below)
  4. The Desktop Items window will appear on the screen. Check the icons that you wish to display (4 on the image below).
  5. Click on OK (5  on the image below).
